A simple recipe for swirled cookies perfect for Valentine’s Day.
Ingredients
- 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
- 2 large eggs
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 3 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- Red food coloring
Instructions
- Cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
- Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the vanilla extract.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
- Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined.
- Divide the dough in half. Tint one half with red food coloring.
- Chill both doughs for at least 30 minutes.
- Roll out each dough color into a rectangle of equal size.
- Stack the dough rectangles, red on top of white.
- Roll up the stacked dough tightly from one of the long sides.
- Wrap the log in plastic wrap and chill for at least 1 hour.
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line baking sheets with parchment paper.
- Slice the chilled dough log into 1/4-inch thick cookies.
- Place cookies on the prepared baking sheets, leaving about 2 inches between them.
- Bake for 10-12 minutes, or until the edges are lightly golden.
- Let the cookies cool on the baking sheets for a few minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.
Notes
- For a stronger swirl, you can add a few drops more food coloring.
- Ensure the dough is well-chilled before slicing for clean cuts.
